‘GIANT SQUID’

From the depths of the sea to the city streets,
Half man, half fish,
scoping the islands, the seas.
Navigating so free
Walking down your street
A ‘Vu’ (sea god) you would like to meet.
Jandels on his webbed feet,
All dressed up in island threads,
His tentacles become dreads,
Goggles become shades,
His legacy never fades.
He travels from island to island,
City to city.
A living being like you and like me,
From two worlds, living two lives,
Ancient and forever young.
Living his two lives, one in his island home under the tropical sun
another in a giant cave in the depths of the Pacific sea, away from everyone.
A nameless man, a sea creator unknown.
A protector of the Pacific Sea and its people.

‘VU’ (pronounced Voo): Reference to a God of the sea from Fijian myths and legends

ANCESTORAL PATHWAYS’

Ancestoral pathways filled with street strays,
Erase that negative phrase
We look ahead, we praise.
Confirmation, expectation,
Working hard in his fathers plantation.
Journeys, miles in the midday sun,
Planning styles like dum-de-de-dum,
Where you from?
Emancipate like Bob Marley said,
Erase the sad, be glad,
At least we’ve been fed
Most islanders living in tin shed,
With their mother, brothers, sisters and their dad
So we wipe away tears, fears
Make use of these good years
Wipe away tears, fears make use of these golden years
We’re going to shine
My Pacific brothers and sisters

MOVEMENT OF THE VILLAGER’

In a village
Filled with barracks
No fence, no boundaries
Living life on the terrace
No time to dream about Paris
Poetically, I share this
Four generations now
Slowly fading away
I notice when I visit home for the holidays
Many people have come and gone away
Grandpas past on and nanas not far away
In the city I’ve come to stay
Just like my ancestors did back in the days
The days of dawn raids and coups
You can take away my home but can never take away my memories
My fore fathers traveled the Pacific Seas
From Uvea to Fiji to N.Zee
That’s how little D came to be
They call me D.Kamali.
